I have posted previously about my experience at the Organic Archery bowmaking workshop that I attended in September, but I have finally collected all my thoughts on the weekend and why it was so beneficial... which involved traipsing through a little bit of the romanticism of traditional archery. Sometimes it surprises people when I tell them tha

Sometimes it surprises people when I tell them that Clarissa and I don't travel much together lately. Our interests and priorities are often aligned, but our schedules often aren't. Add in the beasts and the boy, and usually we each go solo while the others keeps the home fires burning.
This year, however, we were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to do some traveling together in Southern France, first to Sainte Baume, and then to Cassis, the latter of which you'll see in these pictures.
My friends know that I love France, and the friendliness, hospitality, and warmth of the folks we met were reminders of how fantastic human beings are.
This trip was also an opportunity for us to reconnect with one another. We love Tom, but it's important to us that we retain our identities *and* continue making efforts to be a couple, not just parents. That isn't always easy, but it's worthwhile.
Here's looking forward to more trips like this in the future!

My 2023 hunting season has come to an end. I had two deer tags to fill, and was successful with both, including my first buck with a small set of spikes. More importantly, we've got a lot of healthy meat in the freezer.
This is only my third season, and I continue to learn with each outing - working on my systems, my shooting, my processes, and all the odds and ends that can contribute to success. One of the best moves was to partner up with my friend Ashley @akelican on our hunts. She's a stellar spotter and it's a hell of a lot easier to transport and process with two people.
Looking forward to next year - spending time at the range to get better at shooting at greater distances, exploring other areas and other seasons, and continuing to grow as a hunter and outdoorsman.

It takes a fair amount of work to churn out a long

It takes a fair amount of work to churn out a longbow over the course of three days, but it's incredibly fulfilling.
Last weekend I joined three other students for a three-day bow-making workshop with Correy Hawk, and had a blast. We all came away with beautiful and functional bows, and an awesome experience.
I've toyed around with making a few bows in the past, but this instruction chopped off a lot of the learning curve and helped me internalize the process. It's how I learn best - an expert sharing knowledge directly, working hands-on, and getting to really dig into the subject matter.
This workshop has been one of the best investments I've made in myself, and I'm grateful I had an opportunity to take part. Many thanks @organic.archer

Well, Mount Shasta wasn't meant to be on this trip

Well, Mount Shasta wasn't meant to be on this trip. Because of minor injury, we ended up turning back. It's always disappointing when things don't go the way we want, but it's better to have everyone make it back safe and sound.
So, Mount Shasta, I add you - with love - to my list of unfinished business. I hope to see you again soon.
And for now, I'll have to find another mountain to summit.

This morning, as I let Inkling run through the park during our walk, I noticed how much she has slowed down. Having had surgery on each one of her back legs takes it's toll.
But she still runs and romps with joy. Just happy to be out there being wild for a moment.
She's little and broken, but still good.
