Rule #61. Be passionate.
Why is it that in this amazing world we live in, it’s so easy to get apathetic? Why do we become complacent? Why do we get bored? Honestly, most of it comes down to attitude. You can’t always control your circumstances, but you can control your reaction to them. That’s why the cure for boredom is, “don’t be boring!”
One of the best ways to bring excitement to your life is to find something that you’re passionate about; find out what gets your blood pumping and embrace it. Don’t worry if its uncool, or weird, or embarrassing. If it makes you feel alive, don’t hide from it. Be passionate about it.
My wife is passionate about yoga and helping people lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
My friend Mike is passionate about bike racing and helping people achieve their goals.
My friend Kareem is passionate about writing science fiction and fantasy.
I’m passionate about having adventures, spending time outside, and helping others do the same.
Note that we aren’t passionate about the same things. We don’t all love the same stuff; how boring would that be? We don’t all have to love doing the same things, but there’s something for everyone. Not sure what you’re passionate about? That’s okay, I’ll help you find it.
Consider what you loved doing as a kid. Were you always drawing? Always singing? Always running around outside? Maybe give the old things that you loved another try now that you’re older. It might be that you still love doing that stuff!
If not, just keep trying new things. Go new places. Meet new people. Participate in new events and activities. Keep that up and eventually you’ll find something that gets you fired up.
Remember, this doesn’t have to be something that makes you money, just something that makes you happy. It doesn’t even matter if you’re good at it! If you’re passionate about it, the skill will come in time. Just dive in and enjoy yourself.
What are you passionate about?
