Expose Yourself: Rule #79

Don’t get the wrong idea, I’m not telling you to flash people. I’m asking you to expose yourself to the new ideas and new experiences that will help you grow as a person. And maybe hike naked once a year.

Don’t get the wrong idea, I’m not suggesting that you hike naked — unless it’s June 21.

Instead, I hope Rule 79 emboldens you to expose yourself to all things new, different, and strange. It will scare you sometimes, but you can learn to overcome your fear.

All of this will be uncomfortable. But adventures don’t usually happen while you’re on the couch.

And you can’t count on the adventures to come find you. You have to go looking for them.

Best way to do that?

Expose yourself.

What haven’t you tried? What do you want to experience? What would you like to learn?

What adventure do you want to have?

If you don’t know where to start, expose yourself to microadventure.

Ready to take a bigger step? I can help with that too.

Whatever you decide to do, I encourage you to start now, not later. Don’t procrastinate, don’t delay, and don’t make excuses. Start planning now. Start figuring out what it is you want to do and how you can build toward it every day. Camping, hiking, backpacking, even cooking — whatever adventure you want to pursue next, you start by exposing yourself to new experiences. You can’t just wake up one day as an expert camper, backpacker, or chef. You have to develop the skills over time, by having experiences.

But you have to be open to those experiences. Don’t just go through the motions, dive deep into what you’re doing. Chase after it. Go a little crazy for it.

Because that’s how you become the best version of yourself — the you that you’re destined to be.

And maybe think about hiking naked on June 21.
