It’s my favorite holiday. I love it, though probably not for the reasons you’d expect.
It’s not the pagan tradition, though I do admit to feeling a spiritual draw to the holiday. It’s not the children in costumes, though I do take delight in seeing them. It’s not horror movies and scary stories, though I love experiencing them. And it’s not the candy, though I have a sweet tooth like you wouldn’t believe.
“So what is it then?” You might ask
It’s the masks. See, I believe in the power of the mask. Masks can enable, intrigue, or empower us. Sometimes it’s putting one on, other times it’s taking one off, but anytime a mask is involved, it’s not business as usual.
The world is different when you’re wearing a mask. Heroes and villains don’t sport them simply to hide their identity; they wear them because something about a mask changes the wearer. A mask can offer the opportunity to see the world through someone else’s eyes. The chance to try out being someone or something different.
Halloween is one of the rare moments we get to do this. Seldom can we walk around exposing whatever we feel we really are inside, but on October 31st, no one thinks twice about the fact that you’ve let out your other self. You can let your inner hero fly, your inner monster howl, or your inner jester laugh, without fear of reprisal.
So tonight, if you have the opportunity, I would encourage you to embrace the power of the mask. Be something extraordinary. Howl at the moon, breathe in the wind, and live in the moment.
